  • Elizabeth Olsen said she turned down the parts she wanted because of her contract with Marvel.

  • “I started to feel frustrated,” Olsen told The New York Times.

  • She was particularly upset that she couldn’t be in the hit 2015 film “The Lobster.”

Elizabeth Olsen didn’t hesitate to speak to The New York Times about what it’s like to work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Looking back on her time playing Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch in six MCU projects, the actress admitted that it was sometimes difficult because she had to convey the work she really wanted to do.

“It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more aligned with the things that I enjoyed as an audience member,” Olsen said. “And I’m the most honest.”

One of the roles Olsen said she really wanted was in Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2015 Oscar-nominated film “The Lobster.” But due to her Marvel contract, she had to pass.

“I started to feel frustrated,” Olsen said of having to give up the roles she really wanted. “I had that job security, but I was losing those elements that I felt were more part of my being. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it.”

However, time has helped ease these frustrations.

Olsen told the NYT that being able to show off his range on the Disney+ series “WandaVision” and now having a major role in Marvel’s latest release, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” has made him appreciate his situation more.

In fact, she’s up for a standalone Scarlet Witch movie.

“I think I would,” she said of the opportunity to direct an MCU movie. “But it really has to be a good story. I think those movies are best when it’s not about creating content, but having a really strong point of view – not because you need to a plan in three images.”

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is currently playing in theaters.
